Tyne Tees Models 25/3/11

Today I took a trip to Tyne Tees Models where I was assisting year 10 students who are involved in the Creative Enterprise program. The studio is set up in an old warehouse near St James Park - it's far from the glamour that we see in the magazines!
The students were given a brief of  'Opposites Attract' and each group had to come up with a theme to fit this title. They then had to appoint each other as Director, Photographer, Stylist and Model. I really enjoyed helping out as I got to  learn all about each of the different areas, particularly the photography when using different lights for indoor and outdoor photographs. This will really come in useful when photographing my own work!

Here are a few pictures of the students at work..

The Stencil Library - 7/3/11

Having heard many great things about a place called The Stencil Library, I decided to take a trip up there to see it all for myself.  It is a family based business located up in Stocksfield Hall, Northumberland.
Immediately I thought of stencilling as an old fashioned way of decorating, and surely nobody does it anymore? Well, they certainly do and it’s all happening at The Stencil Library!
We arrived at the workshop early morning and met with Helen Morris who is one of the partners in the business. Helen showed us around the workshops, showing us the ins and outs of the business and how a stencil is made. What I found quite interesting is they buy most of their fabrics and furniture from charity shops or market stalls, which is a cheap and eco friendly way to decorate!
Next Helen invited us to see their beautiful country home, which is just next door to the workshop. We began with a tour around 14 rooms. Each room had a very different style, but without doubt they were all equally as fantastic... Who would have thought you could stencil Curtains!
If all that wasn’t enough, we then had a quick lesson and demonstration on the basic stencilling techniques, as you can imagine we were all dying to have a go.
It was such a lovely day out, the art work and creativity that goes into their house is amazing. It was such an eye opener to how creative you can be when using a simple design tool.
Like me, you really do need to see it to believe it!
Thanks again to the stencil library, in particular Helen Morris for taking time out to show us around.
